| Earth Day 2004 - Keep New Mexico Beautiful
On April 27th the City of Santa Rosa, the Parks and Recreation Department, and the 3 Kindergarten Classes at Santa Rosa Elementary School celebrated Earth Day with the planting of four12 to14 foot tall new trees at the south entrance to Park Lake. The 2 Bur Oak trees when mature can reach a height of 60 to 80 feet. The two Redbud Trees can grow to from 40 to 60 feet. Trees planted today will provide shade and beauty to future generations.
The three Kindergarten Classes taking part in adopting and helping plant their own class tree were accompanied by teachers Mrs. Deborah Salas, Mrs. Molly Andarda, Mrs. Danielle Esquibel and Mrs. Paula Lopez. A complete list of the classes was not available at press time.
The project is made possible in part with funds received from Keep New Mexico Beautiful Inc., through grant money provided by the New Mexico Department of Tourism. Keep New Mexico Beautiful Inc. provides beautification grants for communities throughout New Mexico.
The south entrance underwent a major overhaul last year with the construction of the new Blue Hole Road and Bridge. As new sidewalks, street lights, and fiber-optic lines were placed in the area, all of the existing trees, grass and plants at the south boundary to the park were removed.
Recent parks improvements including a wrought iron fence and planting of trees will enhance the south entrance which is a focal point on Blue Hole Road and will be an asset to Santa Rosa as long-term parks improvement, landscaping plans and maintenance plans are established.
Assisting the kindergartens in planting their adopted trees were Santa Rosa Mayor and State Representative Joseph Campos, City Councilman Rudy Sanchez, Community Development Tim Dodge and Maxine Rivera, Chief of Police Jesus Roybal, Tourism Richard Delgado and Lucy Flores, Streets Charles Garcia, Parks Eddie Salazar, Jerry Campos, and Joe Abeyta.
